How fear strikes the stomach: emotions and digestion

Dr. Boris Wydoff · 2026-09-10

Picture someone who has just had a bad fright: they go visibly pale. That pallor is a spasm of the capillaries of the face, plain to the eye. And now the main thing: at that very second the same spasm runs through the vessels we cannot see — through the capillaries of the oesophagus, the stomach, the intestine. An emotion is always bodily; the only question is which organ it will strike.

WHY THE STOMACH IS THE FIRST TARGET
The stomach is protected from its own acid by the constant blood flow of its lining: alkaline blood in the capillary networks neutralises the acid of the gastric juice. While the blood flow is good, the tissue is protected. But under prolonged shocks the vascular spasms spread deeper and reach the lining of the oesophagus and the stomach: the defence weakens, and the acid begins to reach living tissue. This is how an emotional blow becomes a bodily disorder — I give negative emotions a special place among the causes of ulcer disease.

"Eating away the stress" — a double blow

An anxious person reaches for food — and makes things worse: digestion is in spasm, the food lies heavy and ferments, and the heaviness increases the anxiety. The circle is closed. The rule is simple: when you are badly upset — do not eat. Water, breathing, a step out of the door; food when it lets go.

What protects the stomach from emotions

  • A long out-breath. Ten slow breaths with a long out-breath are the quickest way to release a vascular spasm: the nervous system of rest switches on within a minute.
  • Not eating in the middle of a conflict. Lunch under a difficult conversation or an angry news feed is food going into a stomach in spasm.
  • Warmth. A warm bath in the evening relaxes the vessels — including those that have been clenched all day.
  • Changing the order you give yourself. "I won't cope" holds the body in spasm around the clock. "I am recovering, my body is coping" lets it go. This is physiology, not poetry.

A word of caution

Stomach pain, heartburn, black stools — go to a doctor, without delay and without diagnosing yourself. Work with the emotions adds to examination and treatment, it does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions

Can emotions cause an ulcer?

Prolonged shocks put the vessels of the stomach lining into spasm, and its defence against acid weakens. I give negative emotions a special place among the causes of ulcer disease, alongside overeating and acidosis.

Why should I not eat when I am under stress?

In spasm, digestion is almost at a standstill: the food lies heavy, ferments and makes you feel worse. First water and ten slow out-breaths — food afterwards.

How do I release a stress spasm quickly?

By breathing: ten slow breaths, with the out-breath longer than the in-breath. This switches on the nervous system of rest and releases the vessels in a minute or two.
