Sleep before 23:00: why one hour before midnight is worth two after
You can eat perfectly, drink juices and walk every day — and still stand still, if you go to bed after midnight. In sleep the body repairs what you cleansed and nourished during the day: without sleep all the day's work is left unfinished. That is why every one of my programmes has an unfashionable but iron point: lights out before 11 p.m.
What happens in the first hours of the night
The deepest recovery falls in the first half of the night — but only if you are already asleep. Someone who went to bed at 22:30 and someone who went at 01:00 will sleep the same eight hours by the alarm clock, and will wake up as different people: the first rested, the second broken. In its restorative power, an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after — and practice confirms it: ask anyone who has tried.
What steals sleep
- A screen in the hour before bed. The stream of images overloads the brain, and it goes on "finishing its shift" for a long time instead of resting. The body works all night on your last thoughts before sleep — do not give them to the news.
- Eating late. A stomach busy with supper will not let the body go into deep recovery: the night is spent digesting.
- Stuffy air. The brain recovers on cool, clean air. A bedroom that has not been aired means half a night wasted.
AN EVENING ORDER THAT WORKS
An hour before bed — screens away. Air the bedroom. A warm shower or bath — warmth relaxes the vessels and prepares the body for sleep. Three thanks for the day that has passed — written down. And a calm sentence to yourself: the frame of mind you fall asleep in works for you all night.
How to shift your bedtime if you are a night owl
Not in one jump, but by 20–30 minutes every few days. In the morning, do not sleep on to the last drop — get up and go out into the light and the air: morning light is the main interpreter for the inner clock. After two weeks the night owl discovers with surprise that at 22:30 it wants to sleep.
A word of caution
Persistent insomnia, waking at night with anxiety, snoring with pauses in breathing — these are reasons to talk to a doctor, not matters of self-discipline.
Frequently asked questions
Is it true that sleep before midnight is more valuable?
The deepest recovery falls in the first half of the night — but only if you are already asleep. That is why those who go to bed before 23:00 rest better on the same number of hours.
How long before sleep should I stop eating?
Supper should be early in the evening and light. A stomach busy with food will not let the body go into deep night-time recovery.
How do I stop staying up late?
Shift your bedtime by 20–30 minutes every few days, put the screen away an hour before sleep and go out into the light in the morning — the inner clock will retune itself in a couple of weeks.
