You had a big lunch — and half an hour later your eyes are closing, making it impossible to work. Most people consider this normal: “the body is digesting.” In reality, sleepiness after eating is a signal that food is being digested with difficulty and resistance. The same meal can give you energy or take it away — everything depends on the combination of foods.

## What happens in the stomach

Proteins and carbohydrates are digested differently: proteins need an acidic environment, carbohydrates need an alkaline one. Eaten together, they interfere with each other: food stays longer, ferments, and pollutes the blood with fermentation products. The body spends enormous energy on this struggle — and that is where sleepiness comes from.

## Main rules of food combining

- **Keep proteins separate from carbohydrates.** Do not combine beans, lentils, mushrooms, nuts, and cheese with bread, cereals, potatoes, and pasta — eat them only with vegetables and greens. I do not recommend meat at all: it is better to get protein from legumes and mushrooms.
- **Do not mix vegetables with fruits.** Fruits should be a separate meal, not a dessert: eaten after lunch, they ferment on top of other food.
- **Melons and watermelons should be strictly separate from everything else**: two hours after a meal and two hours before the next one.
- **The best time for protein is around noon**, from twelve to one o’clock: stomach juices are secreted most actively at this time.

## What a proper lunch looks like

Build your lunch according to one of two patterns. **Protein-based**: beans, lentils, or mushrooms with a large green salad, without bread. **Carbohydrate-based**: porridge or potatoes with vegetables, without protein dishes. Both are filling; the difference is that after such a lunch you still have energy.

By the way, the main “forbidden combination” is something we eat every day — a sandwich: protein and carbohydrate in their pure form.

## Test it yourself

Do not take my word for it — test it. For one week, simply observe: after which combinations you feel heavy and sleepy, and after which ones you feel light. Your body will answer faster than you expect.

## Where these rules came from

The food combining system is based on the work of physiologist Herbert Shelton, who spent decades observing how different food combinations are digested. I tested these rules on thousands of my students and patients: heaviness, heartburn, and sleepiness after meals disappear for most people within the first two weeks — without any medication, simply by separating foods into different meals.

## What goes with what: a short cheat sheet

- Beans, lentils, mushrooms, nuts, cheese — with green and non-starchy vegetables: salad, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, greens.
- Cereals, potatoes, bread — with the same vegetables and plant fats, but without protein dishes.
- Do not mix fats with carbohydrates: bread with butter is a familiar but heavy combination.
- Fruits — separately; do not combine sweet fruits and dried fruits with proteins.
- Milk — by itself, not as a “drink to wash food down.”

## If you slip up

You cannot cancel a festive table, and you do not need to. The rule is simple: before and after heavy mixed food, give your stomach a rest — a longer pause, water, light vegetables. One wrong meal is not a catastrophe; the catastrophe is when every meal is wrong.

## FAQ

**Q: Why should you not eat meat with potatoes?**
A: Proteins need an acidic environment for digestion, while carbohydrates need an alkaline one. Together they are digested poorly: food stays longer and ferments, and a person feels heaviness and sleepiness. I do not recommend meat itself either: it is better to get protein from beans, lentils, and mushrooms.

**Q: When should you eat fruits if not after a meal?**
A: As a separate meal: for example, as an afternoon snack, without mixing them with other food. About two hours should pass after lunch.

**Q: Can you eat melon with other foods?**
A: No, melon and watermelon should be eaten strictly separately: two hours after any meal and two hours before the next one.
